Kennedy Funding Invitational donates $500,000 to fight breast cancer.
HACKENSACK, NJ/NEW CITY, NY, August 18, 2009 — Most lenders are scrambling for business. Many are fighting just to remain in business. Yet for months, the team at Kennedy Funding has been working day and night for one of its nearest and dearest clients—The Kennedy Funding Invitational charity tennis tournament to fight breast cancer.
Months of planning. Endless meetings. Thousands of phone calls. Last-minute details. It’s all come to fruition now as The Kennedy Funding Invitational, in just its first four years, has raised more than $3 million for two outstanding breast care centers at hospitals in Englewood, NJ and Nyack, NY, making it one of the premier events of its kind in the nation.
Known for their unique ability to quickly close loans involving unusual situations when other lenders can’t, Kennedy Funding is led by three brothers, Jeffrey, Kevin and Gregg Wolfer, a family with a long tradition of philanthropic and charitable works. “It’s always been out philosophy to give back to the community,” according to Jeffrey Wolfer, President and Co-CEO. He continued, “Just as we look closely at special situations involving loans, we make it a point to get involved in causes we feel strongly about.”
That ability to look closely at loan situations is key to what’s helped Kennedy Funding grow consistently to become the leading direct private lender in the nation. Even in this volatile economy, they can often issue loan commitments in just 24 hours and close multi-million-dollar commercial loans within five days.
The inspiration behind The Kennedy Funding Invitational began in 2006, after Leslie Simon lost her battle with breast cancer. Friends Kevin Wolfer (Co-CEO of Kennedy Funding), James Miller and Mitch Klein organized the event in her honor and memory. They enlisted the support of businesses and individuals to raise awareness—and much-needed funding—to fight this horrible disease. The hospitals appreciate the efforts. Thanks, in part, to The Kennedy Funding Invitational, the Breast Center at Englewood Hospital now has one of the only MRI machines in the world dedicated to breast imaging. With the ability to diagnose breast cancer earlier, the prognosis is dramatically improved for patients.
“We’re thrilled at the ongoing success of The Kennedy Funding Invitational,” says Kevin Wolfer, “It’s incredible to see how people join together for such a worthy cause. Our Board of Trustees meets regularly throughout the year to make it all happen. There are far too many people to thank individually, but this event would not be possible without all the volunteered support we receive.”
This year, five days of world-class competition, exhibitions, charity auctions and more drew thousands of corporate and individual benefactors and spectators to Dellwood Country Club in New City, New York. The Men’s Tournament winner, John Isner, took home a $40,000 Grand Prize, with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over runner-up Somdev Vevvarnen. Melanie Oudin took home $20,000 as the winner of the Women’s Tournament after a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Emily Gelber. The competition culminated with a gala “luau-style” party and, despite a slow economy, the presentation of a check for half a million dollars to the Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital and The Breast Center at Nyack Hospital.
In addition to outstanding competition, the celebrity exhibition match has become a traditional highlight of The Kennedy Funding Invitational. Past participants have included former champions Pete Sampras and John McEnroe. This year, was perhaps the most spectacular yet, with one of the all-time greats, Andre Agassi, joining the cause and playing against local professional favorite (and previous patron of the Kennedy Funding Invitational) Justin Gimelstob in the Sunday exhibition match to a capacity crowd at Dellwood. Agassi also appeared at various other events throughout the day.
The aggressive and flamboyant Agassi was a favorite throughout his 20-year career, winning an Olympic Gold Medal and 68 titles. He is one of only five male players to have won all four Grand Slam singles titles and was ranked #1 in the world. Retired from competition, he actively supports charity and philanthropic causes.
